Kaapse Draai
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
To really encounter a city like Cape Town you should
experience both its urban and wild sides. And at Kaapse Draai you are on the
edge of both in the suburbs of Constantia. You can walk from the tropical-style
garden with its mountain stream, huge ferns and palms into Bel-Ombre meadow and
the forest. From there it is a three-hour walk to the Table Mountain cable
station. Porcupines come into the garden at night from the mountain (they love
arum lilies apparently) and there are many birds too, including the noisy (and
palindromic) hadedah.
Or you can drive down to the Constantia Village shopping centre where your
more urban urges can be satisfied. One bedroom is up a little staircase with a
window seat and small balcony overlooking the garden, but all three are bright
with paintings and kilims. Eat summer breakfasts outside to classical music and
enjoy Annelies infectious sense of humour. Closed 7th Dec to 8th Jan roughly.
