Lusthof
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Everyone in the world seems to know Judy, whether through
the Old Cape Farm Stall, from Buitenverwachting wine estate or in our case
through obscure family links in Britain. You probably know her yourself. All her
projects seem to be touched by magic and become social temples for the
Constantia faithful. We spent our first two weeks in South Africa staying in her
guest cottage in the garden and it was a terrible moment when we finally had to
leave the nest and look after ourselves. The cottage, with TV, heaters for
winter and kitchenette, has doors onto its own patio, where you can lie on
sunloungers and admire the flower garden. Judy is truly a maestro in the kitchen
and runs the Spaanschemat River Caf at Constantia Uitsig during the day (where
you will have breakfast); but she will do all she can to help her guests
orientate themselves before and after work. You shouldnt choose Lusthof if you
are after a fully-catered guest house with 24-hour service.
But if you like to feel part of the furniture, and among friends, then this
is the place for you. Mention must finally be made of Chebe, Judys huge,
shaggy, good-natured, lemon-loving bouvier - an integral part of the set-up.
Chebe is a dog by the way. Airport pick-up and car rental can be organised.
There has been some talk of installing a plunge pool; better ask Judy.
