Medindi Manor
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Medindi is a secluded Edwardian manor of
grand dimensions, banded by ground and first-floor verandahs with a garden and
swimming pool tucked away behind tall hedges and bushes. Some of the rooms have
their own doors out onto the stoep and the main building has been renovated with
panache and a sensitive feel for the period. Although well-stocked with bar
fridges, telephones, TVs etc, Medindi avoids like the plague any h(ot)ellish
homogeneity in its dcor and design. The Oregon pine floors, bay windows,
intricate ceilings and marble fireplaces are original and there are unique,
antique touches everywhere, such as Edwardian designs for stately marble and
slate floors. Bathrooms have free-standing baths, Victorian plate shower
heads, brass fittings and a small antique cabinet has been found for each.
There is modernity too, in bright wall colours (yellows and blues), and
splashes of modern art - from the turn of one century to the turn of the next.
Music is an important ingredient for Geoffrey, Medindis owner. He plays the
piano (there was and will be again a grand in the huge breakfast room) and the
house attracts many musicians as guests. A freewheeling, relaxed and youthful
place. Since the last edition Leshira and Basetsana have taken over the
day-to-day management of Medindi and six new rooms have been created from a
converted outbuilding - the smaller rooms are cheaper.
