Redbourne Hilldrop
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
One of the happiest and most humorous guest houses in
Cape Town, so it always seems to me. Many of Jonny and Sharons guests refuse to
stay elsewhere and gifts arrive daily from overseas well almost. One day you
may be surprised to find yourself packing up toys for their kids. Its a small,
intimate place and you are spoiled: free-standing baths, fluffy duvets, big
white pillows, unflowery good taste in mirrors and wood floors, magazines,
African artefacts, great showers.
One room has a spiral staircase down to its bathroom. You eat breakfast at a
diner-style bar stretched along a wall of pretty windows with incredible city
views. Guests are treated as far as possible as friends and each time I visit I
notice the easy rapport that Jonny and Sharon have generated with their guests
probably overnight. Last edition I said that a wall-enclosed pool would be ready
for this edition, but I didnt really believe it. It wouldnt matter if it
wasnt. I said, hedging my bets. Well, lo and behold, there it is, with Table
Mountain looming above as suggested it might!
