Vine Bungalow
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
The Vine Bungalow (and thats bungalow in
the colonial, wrought-iron-verandah sort of sense) is an opportunity (if you can
get in) to live far more stylishly than I can see myself managing ever!
Everywhere you look the finest of the fine gazes evenly back: shiny wood floors,
Jim Thompson fabrics, embroidered white cotton sheets, a glass-box shower in a
marble bathroom, a five-star mandi as Eulalie describes a marble-encased
square pool-bath. And all the kitchen and washing appliances are aristocrats and
top of their range. All these basics are a pleasure in themselves. But Eulalie
has created a home, and guests are treated to the full force of her great taste
for interiors and a wonderful collection of art and artefacts to boot. You take
the whole house and self-cater so it will suit longer-stayers or families best.
Guests are provided with a light meal on arrival (fruits, cheeses, rtisserie
chicken and a bottle of wine for example) but thereafter you will need to get
down to a supermarket - its 500 metres to Wynberg Village. Eulalie lives next
door so is on hand to help you settle in. A family had just arrived from the UK
and were out on the breakfasting stoep by the swimming pool when I visited. They
looked delighted.
