Hattons

Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition

Text written by Simon Greenwood

From the outside you might not expect too much of this door in a keyhole close. But once inside the buildings true dimensions reveal themselves, a great surprise with breezy open spaces and a cavernous sitting room with pole beams and steepling thatched roof. Doors open on both sides, one leading to the pool and the other out to the view over the back of Table Mountain and their own garden. This is immaculately laid out with paths that wind past tropical blooms, a goldfish pond, a vine arbour and this is also where the rooms, named after trees, strelitzia, mimosa, kumassi, are kept. Not so much rooms as little cottages, with their own doors out to the garden and kitchenettes with sink, washing machine and fridge.

The most popular has an unusual gallery bedroom, which looks down on its own sitting room from a height. Kevin and Liz are a young couple, and dedicated to their guests. They (Kevin, Liz, the baby and two friendly dogs) welcome you in with wine, OJ or coffee and they often have a braai for guests who stay more than a couple of nights. Listen carefully when they are spilling the beans about the best spots on the Garden Route!
