Lands End
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Sea, surf, sun, salt, sand, sleep... Lands
End was a dilapidated old Victorian holiday cottage when Rod and Shanell bought
it. It is now utterly transformed. The downstairs remains Victorian in character
while the upstairs part of the house is new and nautical, with a blue wooden
deck and whitewashed walls. Decoration in all the rooms is modern with colourful
bed covers from Mexico and Indonesia for a splash of ethnic chic.
Guest rooms downstairs are centred around a sitting and dining room with
shelves of books and cosy-looking armchairs that grab and dont let go, while
upstairs there is a suitably private honeymoon suite. But all the rooms have
to face the amazing fact of the sea right there, almost within touching distance
- the perfect lullaby. Rod has travelled the world with his surfboard, but it is
difficult to conceive of a more perfect place than Victoria Bay for a
born-to-surf South African to raise a young family. Among its attractions are a
famous surfing wave, a good look-out point for passing whales and a view of the
Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe every afternoon. Rod has also taken out membership of
Fancourt Country Club, "home of the Presidents Cup 2003", on behalf of his
guests.
