Blue Gum Country Lodge
Blue Gum had been open for five months when we visited,
but it already had a buzz about it, and I expect its positively humming by now.
The setting is beautiful and Zanes enthusiasm rubs off easily. Vines (sauvignon
blanc, chardonnay, shiraz) will have been planted on the slope next to the lodge
by the time you read this, but otherwise everything is in place and growing
fast. The main building houses the restaurant where a multi-gifted Annelize
once an opera singer, now chef and manager! - gives it a distinct Cape flavour
and the menus are as eclectic as she is.
There are also a bar and lounge, while the five rooms are across the way. You
are accorded much space and comfort, a Jetmaster fireplace and a braai terrace
outside. This is hassle-free and dummy-friendly: order one of five different
braai menus from the kitchen just try not to burn it! The main focus here,
however, is on the great outdoors, or at least getting a bit of air, so give the
brand-new tennis court a go, or borrow a mountain bike and go out for a ride in
the hills. If thats not your thing, dig out a bird book and sit on the terrace
with a check-list and a glass of wine. Golf courses, beaches, whale-watching and
shark-diving nearby.
