Boschkloof Cottage
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition

We bumped along six or so sandy kilometres, past orchards
of citrus trees and stumbled upon some sort of prelapsarian idyll! A private
valley, cocooned in the Sneeuberg Conservancy, in the foothills of the
Cederberg, flanked by sandstone mountains, its orange groves watered by a
natural stream, the rocks and plants etched in hyper-real clarity by a setting
sun. There are Bushman rock art sites, natural pools in the river to cool off in
and hiking on mountain trails to be done from the house in the early morning and
evening. We parked under an oak tree and were met by Mariet, her two small
daughters and two large dogs. On return from a dip in the river we met Doempie
and a glass of wine and were soon being treated to crayfish kebabs from the
braai, seated under the oak with views up the kloof and a sensational tone to
the air.
It just made us well to be there, but they say it was entirely the worst time
of year (February)! The Smits live in one of the old farmhouses, their guests
next door in the other. Although it is a self-catering arrangement, you are in
such close proximity that you might as well be at a B&B, except with far
more space and privacy. And the cottage? No time for detail - just trust me,
its lovely!
