Langebaan Beach House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
The Langebaan Beach House was once Claires familys
seaside retreat in the days when Langebaan was a small fishing village. It has
grown since then, but still has a nice holiday feel. Claires place is right on
the lagoon with a garden that goes directly down to sand and water. The original
part is over 100 years old, the rest has gradually been added as the family
expanded - most of it now for guests. Two of the bedrooms are suites, with
their own sitting rooms (complete with kettle and small fridge) and views to the
water. The other two rooms are on the other side of the house by the plunge
pool.
There is plenty of living space, a big communal sitting room where Claires
collection of model boats lives and the garden has sun-loungers, an iron table
and chairs for post-beach relaxing. Decoration throughout is simple and
attractive, in keeping with the seaside feel; white-washed walls, terracotta
tiles, bright bed covers. Breakfast is served in the glass-enclosed verandah,
looking down to the beach. This is a relaxed, seasidey sort of place, with an
abundance of restaurants just around the corner. The sea is safe and swimmable
by the way if a little chilly.
