Klipvlei
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
The old farmhouses at Klipvlei form a tightly-knit
courtyard, stoeps running like cloisters around a rectangular swimming pool. The
buildings are buffered by an expanse of green lawn from the harsher, dryer
farmland that surrounds this oasis. This garden teems with birds, including
Nadias white turkeys and geese, and you can pass a contemplative hour or two on
resting seats in places of dark shade under cypress trees. The guest house is
deep and cool too, with low doorways, thick whitewashed walls, long vine-shaded
stoeps, Oregon pine ceilings, alcove fireplaces with wooden lintels and
marble-tiled bathrooms. But the antique is wonderfully contrasted by Nadias
boldly-painted walls and modern paintings, while Evert taught himself how and
then made all the ironwork pieces in the house (candleholders and lamps etc).
Nadias son is a bird enthusiast and keeps two aviaries of bijou love-birds,
budgerigars, doves, parrots and actually those are the only ones I know the
names of! Dinners are often braais on the verandah, eaten en famille, and kids
(by age or inclination) will love the pool, games room and garden. Evert will
take you out on the 500 hectares of wheat, sheep and cattle farm in his bakkie
if you ask. This is a very friendly place that you will want to make your home.
Base yourself here and visit the sea, mountains and vineyards on day-trips.
Closed Christmas to New Year.
