Kersefontein
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Nothing has changed at Kersefontein since the
last edition. Julians convivial dinner parties are still a reason to book in on
their own. And Julian himself remains a Renaissance man, described on his
business card as Farmer, Pig-killer, Aviator and Advocate of the High Court of
S.A. He farms cows, sheep and horses on the surrounding fields, and wild boar
appear deliciously at dinner. He also hires and pilots a six-seater plane and a
flight round the Cape or along the coast is a must. He modestly leaves out his
virtuosity as a pianist and organist and some of us trooped off one Sunday
morning, braving a forty-minute sermon in Afrikaans, to hear toccatas by Bach,
Giguot and Widor at the local church. When not eating, riding or flying, guests
lounge on the pontoon, swim in the river, or read books from Kersefonteins many
libraries.
Or they use the house as a base to visit the coast, or the Swartland
wineries, which are really taking off. The homestead is seventh generation and
the rooms either Victorian or African in temperament, with antiques handed down
by previous Melcks. You are fed like a king, but treated as a friend and I am
always recommending people to go there.
