Aasvoelkrans
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Jeannes enthusiasm for her guests and Montagu
are in equal and ample measure. She was born and brought up here and her
knowledge of the area is second to none. There are a multitude of good hikes in
the surrounding hills, including the mountain behind the house (a handy one and
a half hours up and down). Jeanne will fetch you from longer walks to avoid the
tedium of returning the same way. The house itself and cottages had to be
rebuilt a few years ago after a fire and were designed by Melanie, their
daughter and award-winning architect.
A rounded corrugated roof, wood pillars and beams, plain whites on walls and
big plates of glass are warmed by bright splashes of colour, soft furniture and
an African motif, which is tastefully woven in. Carved animals pop up
unexpectedly, indoors and out, sometimes from large buckets of fresh flowers and
Jeanne is rightly proud of her large, child-friendly garden. Each cottage has
underfloor heating in winter and its own stoep to watch starry summer nights or
enjoy the bright sunshine. Great style, even better hosting. Only two hours from
Cape Town. Enjoy the splendour of Arabian horses, African guinea-fowl and
Rhodesian ridgeback dogs at Aasvoelkrans.
