Honeywood Farm
John and Miranda (sweetly known as Mr and Mrs Honey to locals) gave up teaching
in Natal and took over the family honey farm in 1989. Its been in family hands
since 1817 when the first Moodie left the Orkneys to come to South Africa. The
farm is part of a conservancy and borders the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve,
ideal if you find the call of the wild irresistible. This is one of the richest
forests for bird-watching near Cape Town, and when I stayed John took me to see
a baby crowned eagle living in one of their own trees. You can also go hiking,
horse-riding, mountain-biking (bring your own bikes) and then cool off in a
swimming pool fed by a mountain stream.
There are four cottages, bedrooms cosily rustic rather than luxurious, with
living rooms, open fires and small kitchens. Three of the cottages are set
around the central courtyard near the Green Room where Miranda, an artist,
serves breakfast and other meals. The fourth cottage, Hunters, is further away
and must be one of the most romantic spots in South Africa, tossed in a sea of
rolling hills, lit only by hurricane lamps and warmed by a huge open fire. A
minimum of two nights is recommended. A convenient stop-off on the way to
Plettenberg Bay and Knysna from Cape Town.
