Kliphoogte
Three kilometres of dusty track bring you to Kliphoogte, one of South Africas
most charming farm B&Bs. Herman, absurdly cheerful for a man who gets up at
4.30 am, runs a fruit and dairy farm on the banks of the Leeurivier while his
mother Marita looks after the guest house. Herman represents the fifth
generation of Lindes to work the property, and will take guests on walks around
the farm, or leave them in the company of the boisterous weaver-birds to swim at
the lake. At meal times, Marita takes charge and cooks typical South African
dinners.
Bread, butter and milk are all home-made, as is the lemonade and brandy cake.
After dinner, Herman will probably sing to you, and then take you in his 4x4 up
a nearby hill to look at the stars. The main bedroom is a sweet, blue affair
with sturdy old Afrikaner furniture, family photos and rugs made by the farm
workers. The other two rooms, which also share a bathroom, are more functional,
but this is not a place where you will want to spend long in bed; there is too
much going on outside. To sit on the Kliphoogte stoep, listening to the cicadas,
and look out over the small, lush valley is to know contentment indeed.
