Almond Hill House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Just one room, but what a place! Start with the
bathroomyou wont find many better in South Africa, enough space for a large
bedroom. Naturallly there are both shower (glass-fronted) and bath (vaulted and
candlelit), a stone floor and the demurer tones are offset by a single bright
Gauguinesque painting. And the bedroom itself has been mulled over in detail for
your greatest possible happiness: percale linen, huge bed, antique furniture,
armchairs and table, satellite TV, fridge. And two stable-style doors, one
leading towards the fabulous (still maturing) gardens, the other onto a stoep,
the stage upon which breakfast typically is enacted (but its your choice).
You will enjoy the view. The house was only recently built on high ground and
in the distance the walls of mountains sweep round until the Hottentots Holland
drop into the sea at Gordons Bay and of course theres False Bay itself. While
in the foreground a rectangular swimming pool sits in a wide expanse of lawn
(6000 square metres). Guests are welcome to use the pool too and you can walk
off onto trails from the house. Lesleys mtier is interior design, but her
exterior designs (i.e. the gardens and the house) aint bad either. You will be
well looked after, dont you worry.
