Brendas Guest House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
From the green brick garden terrace this early 1900s
house juts forward like the prow of a ship and Brenda has done nothing to dispel
the image. Life-saving buoys, fishing nets and oars cling to the surrounding
walls. Guests sit out here for al fresco evening drinks round the pool from the
honesty bar (sherry and port are on the house by the way). Rooms inside are
bright and cheerful in wicker, tiles and wood, while quilts, sunflowers and oil
paintings add plenty of vivid colour.
The rest of the interior space is open-plan: a sitting room with white sofas
and glass coffee table, and the dining table where breakfasts are taken all
together (breakfast also makes its appearance outside on fine mornings). Brenda
makes the breakfast herself (including specials), serving through a
marble-topped hatch, so she can spend at least some of the day helping you out
with things to do. She patrols the Cape countryside on her huge motorbike
gaining first-hand knowledge of where to go and what to do. A very friendly base
indeed... Purdy, Brendas minuscule dog, has not grown much since I last saw
her. Golf, the Waterfront shopping complex and the city centre are all close by.
