Montague House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
An enclave in the lee of Table Mountain, Montague House is
secluded behind walls in recherch Higgovale, a modern take on a Tuscan villa
with rough, washed walls, terracotta paving and a pool offered shade by the
frangipani tree. The interior main room is a large open-plan sitting room,
office, kitchen and breakfast room with great solid beams, tiled floor and the
Italian theme is taken up in old master blow-up prints on walls (Botticellis
Birth of Venus for example). There are just five rooms all lightly themed
according to a Shakespeare play (dont worry, they havent plumped for Titus
Andronicus or Macbeth!), and centred round grand four-poster beds draped with
mosquito netting that is both ornate and functional.
No corners have been cut in designing and fitting out bathrooms with glass
cubicle showers and separate bath, and some lovely volcanic limestone tiles.
Upstairs rooms have balconies with views of the mountain and all the rooms are
blessed with space-age, flat-screen TVs, intriguing to the uninitiated. Stephen
and Janet are a British couple, sharing the house with their guests, offering a
great deal of good advice on your onward trip, and expert on wines. They stock a
Top Twenty wine list that keeps abreast of reality rather than notoriety! Wine
buffs are extremely welcome. Stephen is also an accomplished chef and dinners
are eaten en famille. During the life of the guide two more rooms are being
built.
