Vygeboom Manor

Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition

Text written by Simon Greenwood

Vygeboom is a destination in itself. Callie is a prosthodontist and microlight pilot, Luli an artist and these disparate talents merge seamlessly to create a fantastic guest house experience in Cape Towns northern suburbs. Durbanville is an ideal location for visitors, with easy access to the bright lights and beaches of Cape Town, but also on established wine routes (including the ruling triumvirate of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek). Prisoners of the game of golf will also find themselves embarrassed for choice. But this assumes, of course, that you feel like going anywhere. Luli has based the themes of each amazing room on her own gigantic and wonderful murals, doffing the cap to Rubens, Matisse, Manet etc. Comfort, however, does not play second fiddle to artistic whimsy - beds are huge, bathrooms luxurious.

Add to this charming hosts (Callie does his dentistry next door), spectacular views to the distant wall of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, a vast sitting room with a three-quarter size snooker table, a large pool in the garden and a resident owl who sings in the bluegum at night. Callie, by the way, is a microlight pilot and organizes trips for guests - an exciting way to go whale-spotting in season.
