Longfield House
A gravel road climbs the mountain, escorted on both sides by vineyards. And at
the top Longfield House occupies a sensational vantage, gazing out like an Inca
on the dramatic Helderberg, and all the way to Cape Point on clear days. Wine is
an unavoidable motif in the area generally, but perhaps even more so at
Longfield. Pieters family have been farming in the region since the 17th
century, the Eikendal and Longridge wineries surround the property and didnt
we share a sociable bottle over an impeccable salad lunch thrown together by
Nini.
The Cloetes have restored for their guests an old workers cottage by the
horse paddocks above the house. The country-style sweetness has been retained
with whitewashed walls, wicker seats, fir cones in the fireplace, matting
floors, stoep and small garden; rustic yes, but very comfortable with it.
Theres a great big bath with brass taps, a separate shower, telly, and
everything in the kitchen you might need to self-cater. The cottage has been
left open-plan, a step dividing the sitting and sleeping areas for added light
and air. How nice to withdraw up to your private mountain eyrie after a hot day
at the wineries, on the beach or perfecting your golf swing. I think most guests
just chill out with the view and dont bother.
