Fairview
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
This picturesque, listed Victorian house on the eastern
edge of George is an intriguing place to stay. With its high ceilings and
abundant Victoriana, Fairview has the feel of an old English rectory, although
the vivid colours owe more to African than Anglican themes. The bedrooms are a
treat, particularly the two in the main house, which still have their original
1880s floorboards, beams and fireplaces.
The Orange Room, complete with dashing white trim, bathes in afternoon
sunlight, while the Yellow Room soaks up the morning. If youre lucky, youll be
able to choose between them on arrival. The sitting room has the same high
ceilings and wooden floors, with shuttered sash windows and enormous linen
press. The Benkensteins have retained many of the original window-panes a
hindrance to their sons cricketing exploits perhaps, but they add to the
authenticity of the restoration. Philda used to be a nurse but is far happier
running a guest house. She loves having people in the home and will happily cook
South African meals if people want them. Husband Desmond, a green-fingered
doctor, is the creative force behind the glorious garden nota particularly
bene the rhododendrons and orange trees.
