The Waves

Iain and Liza have an amazing photo from 1906 when The
Waves was the only house on the beach, used as a holiday home by an Oudtshoorn
farmer. It is not surprising a few others have since joined the club. The hamlet
is closed to vehicles - only residents hold the key to the gate, so you can park
your car securely at night. Im no surfer, but the waves here are enticing,
rolling up the perfect arc of this small bay at a height that is challenging,
but not scary.
Iain will give you a wetsuit and surfboard, or fins and a snorkel. Or, if you
like your activity less damp, there is horse-riding nearby or three lovely walks
of handy lengths - one, two or three hours. The house is right on the sea (see
above) and all three bedroom suites (each has its own lounge) look out, although
you may spend more time on the verandah watching the waves roll in. They are
hypnotic. Whales (in season) may heave into sight to your right, while to your
left the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe (yes, its a steam train) runs through Victoria Bay
twice a day. Iain and Liza are consummate hosts and great fun. Bay life could be
addictive.
