The Gallery Guest House

Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition

Text written by Simon Greenwood

Lolly manages the happy trick of combining her work as an artist with running a friendly, laid-back guest house in a peaceful part of Knysna. She is a strong force for the promotion of arts and crafts in the town - itself a honeypot for those that can hold a pencil steady. Thus The Gallery. Her own and local artists paintings and sculptures dot the walls and cover the carpets in the guest house, one of the longest-running in Knysna.

There is a separate private studio where Lolly desperately tries to find time to work. The main room where breakfast etc happens is upstairs and the adjoining wooden deck has tremendous views out over the Knysna Heads, Leisure Isle and Pledge Park nature reserve. There is lots to do in town, what with sunset boat rides, the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, sea swimming, canoeing etc and Lolly is very knowledgeable. Best of all she has special private places - sunset spots, music venues, beaches, walks and restaurants you will only find with her help. The bedrooms themselves are simple, showcasing more local artwork, but cater for all your needs. Choose the Gallery for the irrepressible personality of both house and hostess. Nine good restaurants within 2 mins.
