Weldon Kaya
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Perched on the top of a hill, with views over
Plettenberg Bay and the Robberg Peninsula, is the gloriously idiosyncratic
Weldon Kaya, a riot of colour and imagination. David and Gail have created a
haven for guests that is firmly afro-centric in its execution. All the
ingredients of a successful guest house - comfort, friendly hosts, views etc -
are there, but blended with a strong African sense of improvisation and rounded
off with a lively open restaurant and bar.
In the former you are seated in half an old tin bathtub on legs (with
cushions!) at tables with old maps of Africa laminated into the surface, and
illuminated by a chandelier of green bottles. David assisted the sculptor, his
son, in the bottle-emptying phase - a noteworthy feat in itself. A ramp leads
from the front door up to a lawn and plunge pool (a huge old water tank) on the
very roof of the bar. Recycling is a strong theme across the whole property,
including the cottages. All are different so take your pick from square, round,
wooden, brick or clay and straw. Some have car windows built into the wall, some
have more conventional apertures but you will sleep well in all of them. Closed
3 weeks in June.
