The Port-wine Guest House
The Port-wine Guest House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
The key to the Port-Wine is Andrea herself who juggles a
young family and her excellent guest house with kindness, energy and a sense of
humour. No fingers wag and no tongues tut-tut. You can dress up for (excellent)
dinners if you want, or you can shuffle up, like I did, in whatever rags you
woke up in. Evening meals are a major feature at the Port-Wine (as Andrea is
such a good cook, although she doesnt seem to think so) and everyone eats
together, including husband Chris.
The Nels have tried to remain faithful to the houses 1830s origins, saving
what yellowwood they could from the ceilings and recycling it into dressers and
beds; the new ceilings are of reed and beams. Four-poster beds are solid and
firm with lacy canopies. During the day guests can lounge round the pool, visit
the port wine growers, explore the spectacular mountain passes nearby; or in the
evening climb the mountain and count the satellites when the sun goes down.
Andrea, who is a registered tour guide, will also gladly take guests around
their own ostrich and fruit farm. The house is in the heart of Route 62 country.
