Onse Rus
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
The official pamphlet does a good job of
conveying the delights of Onse Rus, but it modestly fails to bear testament to
the biggest plus, the Smiths themselves. Talking shop was never meant to be
this much fun. They fell in love with Prince Albert and the 150-year-old Cape
Dutch Onse Rus in 1999 and their enthusiasm for both town and house has not
abated since. Guests who have come down over the Swartberg Pass are given a
whisky for their nerves, those who havent can go up there with Gary. Hell even
take you to The Hell, a famously isolated community 57 km down a dirt track.
Back at the house, the large living room is hung with a permanent exhibition of
local artists work.
The four thatched bedrooms all have private entrances, high ceilings, white
walls and simple Karoo furnishings. One used to be part of the bakery, another
was the printing room for a local newspaper. The house has some history! Lunch
is available from Wednesday to Sunday, and if the weather permits it usually
does you can sit out on the verandah and enjoy fig ice cream in the shade of
the Cape Ash and Karoo Pepper trees
