Bucaco Sud
Everything in this beautiful place has been designed and built by Jean,
including the house itself, which sits halfway up a mountain in South Africas
first Biosphere Reserve, a nature lovers paradise with tranquil lakes, stunning
beaches, the Harold Porter Botanic Gardens and a penguin colony. Buaco Sud was
once Jeans castle in Spain (or Portugal I should say), now a flight of personal
fancy come true. The upstairs sitting room has windows on both sides, and light
streams through to mountain views in one direction and sea views in the other.
Guest bedrooms are eye-catching, full of startling colours, flowers and
eclectic stuff collected by Jean or donated by friends. They all look down
over the sea, except Shangri-La at the back - perhaps my favourite - where you
can walk straight out through French windows onto the Kogelberg mountain. Local
artists work (for sale) adds even more colour to the vibrant decor. Its not a
place for TVs and mobile phones. Genuine care, a sense of humour and
enthusiastic hospitality in a house where every detail is home-spun. Dinners and
lunches available at Casitas, Jeans restaurant in Kleinmond.
