Skeiding Guest Farm
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Neels and Ann-Lize are fantastically energetic you
need to be to run a farm, a young family and a guest house in the same lifetime.
Guests eat wholesome farm cooking at dinner (all together) and are involved as
far as possible in the workings of the farm. This could mean watching the 1500
ostriches being fed in the morning, but there are also indigenous beef cattle,
some sheep and goats, two dogs called Asterix and Obelix and a couple of young
children too. The farm is on high, open, rolling terrain, but it is only a short
drive into surprising, Garden Route-style forest and the beautiful
Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve for day hikes.
The area is a birders paradise too with 17 endemic species and they have
counted at least 50 species on the farm itself. Alternatively, you can head down
over South Africas only working ferry to the De Hoop Nature Reserve or go to
Witsand (35 km) for the whales (June to November) and boat rides. Its an
outdoorsy sort of place and bedrooms have all you need with strong showers. The
cottage rooms have their own sitting area too. A friendly family farm and an
education for city slickers.Professionally run horse rides can be arranged
