Rockwood Cottage
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Rockwood is an extremely beautiful protea farm
in the Cederberg highlands 800 metres above sea level. Both the main house where
Pam and Noel live and their large and lovely guest cottage (self-catering) have
front stoeps that overlook a succession of dams, the hinterland channelled away
for miles and miles by rugged sandstone mountains. The highest peaks of the
Sneeuberg Conservancy are often covered with snow in winter.
The guest cottage is cradled among giant rocks with the eponymous rockwood
trees growing from beneath. And to the front a story-book stream burbles past
the stoep and oak tree there. A wide expanse of lawn leads to more treasure.
Noel has created a natural rock swimming pool that is filled all year round by a
fresh drinkable river that cascades gently over the rocks. A sundowner either in
the pool or in the jacuzzi just above allows you time to digest the magnificent
view and feel properly smug. Behind this there is a deep gorge and waterfall, an
idyllic world of water and rock, full of wild flowers in season with two bush
trails cut through natural gardens. Pam and Noel will happily show their guests
all there is to do on the property and in the region, still so unspoiled by
tourism. They also have a separate extra cottage with en suite shower that
sleeps two.
