Oude Wellington Estate
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
There seems to be so much to catch the eye even as you
rumble along the 800 metre gravel road to Oude Wellington: vineyards on both
sides, pet ostriches peering over a fence, ostentatious peacocks and geese. Rolf
and Vanessa are clearly the hospitable types (how else could ostriches find a
home on a winery?). The estate was originally conceived as a pineapple farm, as
seen in the design of one of the gables and it took Rolf and Vanessa two years
to restore the whole estate to its former glory. Four rustic double rooms are in
the original farmhouse (built in 1790) with pole beams and white-washed walls;
the other two are in the more modern main building (well, 1836), along with the
beautiful farm kitchen, snooker room and bar, and a terrace looking out over
vineyards, where breakfast is served in the summer.
There is a partly-shaded pool off to the side of the main house, a brandy
still in the barn, and it is a short walk down to the estates restaurant, the
River Caf, which is popular with locals (always a good sign). Guests are also
invited to watch wine-making taking place at the right time of year. "We farm
and dine and love company" say Rolf and Vanessa in their brochure!
