Lekkerwijn
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Lekkerwijn (pronounced Lekkervain) is a 1790s Cape Dutch homestead, with a grand
Edwardian extension designed by Sir Herbert Baker. You would probably have to
pay to look round if Wendy didnt live there. It positively creeks with family
history. You can tell when one family have lived in a grand house for
generations - all the furniture, fittings and decoration look so at home. This
is not some country house hotel, nor some converted annexe.
You share the house fully with Wendy whose family have lived here since the
late 19th century - unless of course you would prefer the privacy of the wagon
house cottage. My strongest impressions are of the central courtyard with its
gallery and cloister, the yellowwood floors and beams and the towering palms
planted by Wendys grandfather, the informal taste of the nursery bedroom, a
wonderful breakfast... and Wendy herself, who is full of character and so caring
of her guests. You can self-cater in the wagon house cottage and plans for
carriage rides are in the offing. Closed occasionally during June and July.
