Roggeland Country House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
The highlight of a stay at Roggeland must be the food! All reports glow with
praise: 8-12 different wines to taste pre-dinner, an opportunity to chat to
other guests and Gordon himself; then four mouth-watering courses each with a
different wine specially chosen to accompany it. Vegetarians will be
particularly happy and meals and wines are never repeated during your stay. The
house is an 18th-century Cape Dutch homestead with large, thick-walled rooms -
sometimes huge - with a variety of original features: beam and reed ceilings,
thatch, antique furniture.
The dining room, for example, is in an old kitchen with its original grate
and cooking implements. Some bedrooms are in the main house and some are
separate from it, but none let the side down. Character abounds; floors slope,
beams curve and attractive bright-coloured walls are often uneven with age; and
there are always fresh flowers and home-made soaps in the rooms. Roggeland is
family-run and the atmosphere is friendly and caring as a result. Farmland and
mountains surround the property and the Minkleys will organize evening rides on
horseback into the foothills. Great hospitality and very good value too.
Children by arrangement. Mountain biking and fishing.
