Muldersvlei Estate
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Helens home is a Cape Dutch beauty (1817) - ask for a tour and relish the grand
dimensions and original yellowwood beams and oregon pine floors. Muldersvlei
dates back to this time as a farm too, today a mix of fruit and wine (shiraz and
pinotage). One of the rooms is actually in the manor house, a treat, while the
others are in the Cellars, a converted farm outbuilding with its own
kitchen-cum-dining room and sitting room; beds are solid and clothed in linen of
high quality. There is a farmhouse feeling to the place with fresh flowers in
pretty bunches and a porch at the back of the cottage serves as the perfect
breakfast-cum-braai setting: in the background the Simonsberg mountains; in the
middle distance a sporadic view of the famous Blue Train and the occasional
steam train - perhaps a thrill for trainspotters; and cows wander through wild
arum lilies in the foreground.
There are oaks in the garden for shade, or a swimming pool for further
refrigeration. This is a real farm setting from which to sample the many wines
of the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wine routes, including the farms very own
Starke wines. Helen herself is very relaxed and welcoming and another good
reason to come to Muldersvlei. Wonderful bird life on the farm. Helen will
direct you to the best viewing spots or organise a tour with an excellent
birder.
