River Manor Guest House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
Since the first edition of this guide, River Manor has annexed the listed
building next door, and it is fair to say that Johan and Leigh have gone from
strength to strength as a result. A central Stellenbosch townhouse has become
two, and thanks to unwavering Swanepoel enthusiasm and attention to detail, both
with their guests and with the decor - the African colonial theme has been
successfully carried over to the second, older house - the experience remains a
rich one. The new rooms are as large as those in the original house, and also
furnished with antiques. Beds and bedding are fit for a king and there are many
added comforts such as soft towelling bathrobes and port and sherry trays.
Old maps on walls, restored leather suitcases and travellers trunks complete
the effect. With the second house also came another garden, where you will find
a small health and beauty spa (massage, steam room and spa) overlooking a second
pool, ideal for pampering the weary or the self-indulgent. Breakfast is served
at the poolside or in the large conservatory, another new addition to the
original building. So guests have plenty of different spaces in which to relax
between exploratory walks around town. Closed last three weeks of June.
