Summerwood Guest House
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition
Text written by Simon Greenwood
You notice the huge stinkwood tree first, then the swimming pool (a proper one
for swimming in). The smooth, well-tended lawns of the garden seem to beckon the
guests, who convene round tables on the terrace in the evening, or take a few
hours out from wine and history to brave the sun by day.
The house itself was built in 1904 by an Italian architect - light and airy,
with pretty Italian windows. All the bedrooms are furnished with a summery
feel (lots of yellows) and uncluttered, allowing for much clean wall and floor
space. The room at the top has panoramic views of garden and mountain. Hilary
and Malcolm take the greatest care that their guests are properly orientated,
find the best restaurants (some of the best around are a short walk away, as is
the Jonkershoek nature reserve and its mountain trails if you feel like building
up an appetite). They clearly revel in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere they
have created at Summerwood. Stellenbosch is only twenty minutes from Cape Town
International Airport.
