Hilltop Country Lodge
Selected by The Greenwood Guide to South Africa, 2nd edition

Approach along a narrow sealed road and you eventually
emerge on an open hilltop, catching exciting taster-glimpses of the view through
the windows and doors of the house. You will be shown to the front patio and
there, hundreds of metres below, the 40-kilometre sweep of Wilderness Beach arcs
away, while in the foreground neatly tended and well-watered flower gardens,
clucking with hens and their chicks, run down into the plunging fynbos. The
swimming pool, teetering on the edge of the mountain, offers perhaps the best
sensation of height of all. Hennies family have owned this dramatic parcel of
land since the 1960s, and they used to come and holiday here before the lodge
was built.
Their bit of mountain has now been designated a private nature reserve, so no
new buildings will ever spoil the party. The bedrooms today are very luxurious.
All have private entrances and balconies with the view, mohair rugs on beds for
cool nights, lampshades made of twine and many of the antiques were collected by
the Schoemans in Japan. Most guests will spend their days on the beaches
(Wilderness or Victoria Bay) or exploring the forested hinterland of the Garden
Route. But there are plenty of reasons to spend at least one full day lounging
around at Hilltop. Some restaurants in the area do a pick-up service.
