Strawberry Hill Country Lodge
Strawberry Hill Country Lodge

The Turners must love watching the reaction of their
guests as they first confront the view at Strawberry Hill. I started applauding,
congratulating people and ordering copies of the prints! The valley plunges
straight from the lawns in front of the house and nothing spoils the unfettered
natural beauty of this hill-marooned farm. Lynda had commandeered Bill (her
father-in-law) to lead me down the mountain trails through ferny afro-montane
forests to The Point, a hidden idyll of cascading water at the frothy
confluence of two rivers. We went for a swim in the rock pools and guests are
ordered (by me!) to take a picnic on a fine day and explore. Back at the lodge
fastidious attention to detail sees luxury piled on luxury. Huge baths with lots
of water pressure, separate showers, soaps and shampoos, wonderful linen on new
beds, mohair blankets.
Drinks and dinner are taken with the other guests (before a log fire on cool
nights) delicious crudits, tomato soup and Malay curry on the night I stayed.
Breakfast was equally hard to fault - typically I was given a whole jug of
freshly squeezed OJ. Strawberry Hill bowled me over because it is so rare for a
place to provide such extremely high levels of comfort without compromising one
smidgin on the friendly family atmosphere.
