Bontebok National Park

Welcome

Sheltered by the rugged bastion of the Langeberg Mountains, and bordered to the south by the peaceful Breede River, the Bontebok National Park provides a refuge for not only bontebok, but also for other species such as Cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest and grey rhebok. The park is situated within the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest, but richest of the world's six floral kingdoms.

ACCOMMODATION

  • All accommodation is serviced daily and provided with bedding, towels and soap.
  • Six-berth chalavans, each with wooden anteroom, basic kitchen equipment and communal ablution facilities.
  • Locally generated 220V electricity is available in the ablution blocks from sunset to 21:30.

Camping (no power)
  • Caravan and tent camp sites are located close to the Breede River.
  • A maximum of six persons, one caravan with a side tent and one vehicle, or one tent and one vehicle, or one autovilla or one motorised caravan will be permitted per site. Maximum of one vehicle per campsite - Additional vehicles R20, 00 each per day.

ACTIVITIES

  • Game viewing from own vehicle.
  • Two short nature trails, starting and ending in the restcamp area.
  • Bathing in the Breede River - only in the immediate vicinity of the camp sites.
  • Angling in the Breede River - anglers must be in possession of a valid angling permit.

FACILITIES

  • Picnic sites with ablution and barbecue facilities are also available for day visitors.
  • Shop at the park entrance where basic commodities, meat, beer, wine and curios may be purchased. Fresh produce is available in Swellendam.
  • Petrol and diesel are also available in the park

GENERAL INFORMATION

Climate
The region has a temperate climate with an average rainfall of +/- 500 mm per annum, occurring mainly during early summer and winter.
Day Visitors
Bontebok is a perfect venue for day visitors for people driving between Cape Town and the Garden Route, or for people staying in the Swellendam area.

Handy Hints

  • Remember to bring along a flashlight, grill, firewood, angling equipment, bathing suit, walking shoes, binoculars and wildlife reference books.
  • Consult the Swellendam Publicity Association for places of interest and activities in and around the area.

Take Note
  • Pets are not allowed in a national park.
  • Firearms must be declared at reception where they will be sealed. The seal will be broken upon departure.
  • Motor cycles are not allowed.
  • No power boats on the river.
  • No private generators allowed at caravan or camp sites.
  • Doctors, pharmacies, vehicle repair and police services are available in Swellendam.

Wheelchair Access
There are no adapted accessible facilities in Bontebok. The shop/reception has a step at the entrance. Park has a circular game drive at its primary attraction. On it visitors can observe several large herbivores including the Bontebok after which the park is named. The camping site is situated on a relatively level location allowing a wheelchair user to traverse its area and interact with nature. However there are barriers to use the ablution facilities and at the chalavans. The information building is accessible.

AREAS OF SPECIAL INTEREST

Bontebok is an excellent place to use as a home base to visit:

  • The wine routes and historic buildings of Swellendam, Robertson and Montagu.
  • The hot springs in Montagu also justify a visit.
  • A six-day hiking trail winds through the Langeberg Mountains and starts in Swellendam.
  • The Breede River is popular for canoeing.
  • The Breede River can be crossed by pont at Malgas.
