Groote Schuur Hospital

Groote Schuur Hospital is one of the major teaching hospitals of the Associated Academic Hospitals' group, the other two being Tygerberg Hospital and Red Cross Children's Hospital. These three hospitals are integral components of the Health Service of the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape, South Africa.

The main functions of the hospital are to provide patient care (especially at tertiary and higher levels), teaching and research. Patients are charged according to their income or their membership of a medical aid scheme.

The hospital is funded by the State, via the Provincial budget, a conditional grant for tertiary level services, and a grant for education. National and provincial financial constraints have in recent years severely impacted on the health services provided by the hospital.

A long-standing and formal partnership exists between the hospital, the University of Cape Town and the Health Sciences Faculty. The hospital has also enjoyed close and collegial involvement with other tertiary institutions such as the Carinus Nursing College (now incorporated in the Western Cape College of nursing), the University of the Western Cape and the Technicon. We provide the practical training opportunities for students from all of these.

Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery incorporates all surgical disciplines. The Head of the Department is an elected position and is responsible for the administration of the Division in the Teaching Hospitals Group and represents the Department on the Teaching Hospitals Central Advisory Committee (THCAC) Executive and other executive bodies. He is supported by an Executive Committee consisting of the full professors and Heads of Divisions within the surgical disciplines.
