Tyger Valley Arena opens!

The Tyger Valley Arena in Tyger Valley Centre opened in November the grand culmination of a five-month development.

This approximately R25-million revamp created an entertainment arena, which will accommodate food, leisure, banking and exciting retail stores. "We demolished the dated Mississippi Detour and replaced it with the beautiful, classic Tyger Valley Arena," said Johan Venter, Centre Manager, Tyger Valley Centre.

The Tyger Valley Arena is contained in a three-level setting using the very latest designs and techniques, incorporating glass panels sandblasted with decorative designs, blended with brushed steel cladding and fittings.

The lowest level of the Arena is equipped with a central stage incorporating a water feature. Floor areas of the lower and upper levels overlooking the central atrium have been extended to provide additional seating for the public offering an excellent panorama of the central stage. The four decorative columns clad in steel that proudly stand in the new Tyger Valley Arena cost a whopping R250 000 each -- the value of these four columns totalling R1-million.

A phenomenal 38 tons of re-enforcement steel was used in the construction of the new Tyger Valley Arena and the value of the tiling work alone is an incredible R3-million, with much of the top-quality tiling imported from overseas.

Exquisite combinations of off-white and rose marble floor tiles with a border of black granite have been used throughout the public areas on all levels.

The previous elevator was removed, renovated and fitted with glass walls, before being re-installed and the two escalators have been remodeled and clad with glass.

Strategically placed high-tech deep blue reflective fabric suspended from the roof accentuates the illusion of spaciousness while the roof beams are painted in black to blend with the defused sky light.

Stocks Building Africa (Cape) Pty Ltd was awarded the building contract and sub-contracting contracts were awarded to local residents with jobs being created for local labour with about 250 local labourers on site at any given time.

One of the biggest challenges faced during this project was the continued trading of retailers in the area being refurbished and communicating with shoppers to direct them to the open stores and ensure their safety while passing the construction site.

But this was achieved with extensive planning, extra customer care manpower, the clever use of signage and regular written communication. "The Tyger Valley Arena is a magnificent new dimension to Tyger Valley Centre and we believe it will meet the needs of our shoppers and create a wonderful environment in which people can shop, relax and enjoy their experience at Tyger Valley Centre," said Venter.
