Golden Arrow serves the entire metropolitan Cape Town area with services provided from six depots. As the sole provider of scheduled bus transport in the Western Cape metropole, the company plays a significant role in meeting basic needs as well as building the economy of the region.

The history of the company started in 1861, when the original Cape Town and Green Point Tramway Company was established. Thereafter a succession of companies formed links in an unbroken chain of mergers and acquisitions that lasted over 137 years. Golden Arrow, in its current form, was established on 1 April 1992 when all the bus operations in the Western Cape controlled by the Tollgate Holdings subsidiary, Tramway Holdings, were taken over by a consortium of investors led by the Tramway Holdings management. .
The company serves the entire metropolitan Cape Peninsula and Cape Flats area, encompassing the cities of Cape Town and Bellville and the other four municipalities. This includes areas such as Mitchells Plain, Blue Downs, Atlantis, Langa, Guguletu, Nyanga, Crossroads and Khayelitsha. Services for these areas which are spread over approximately 1 350 square kilometres, are provided from six depots at Arrowgate in Montana Estate, Tollgate in Woodstock, Atlantis, Philippi, Simonstown and Eastgate in Blackheath.
