Off Moroka Cafe Africaine
Off Moroka Cafe Africaine
Off Moroka Caf Africaine (est 1995) is a little multi-cultural island in the
austere landscape of Adderley Street. Frequented by senior politicians,
government officials, media and cultural gurus and other interesting people, Off
Moroka has become the home of the intellectual and artistic leadership of Cape
Town and they all left their marks on the walls at Off - as some affectionately
call it. "Viva the lekkerness of life" wrote Albie Sachs. "Keep Parliament in
the Cape", wrote Patricia De Lille and "The best coffee in the world" wrote
Cyril Ramaphosa.
Monday nights features the Off the Wall Sessions. Anything goes, poetry,
comedy, music appreciation, book launches and short story reading. Since its
inception, the Off the Wall programme has hosted such greats as Malika Ndlovu,
the AmaBek Collective, child poets, James Matthews, Tina Schouw, satirist Ivan D
Lucas (aka Ken J de Bruin) and Errol Dyers. Sunday nights feature African
feature films and on Tuesdays Off Moroka hosts discussions on short and
documentary films. At other times the ambience is amplified by music which
varies from jazz and African sounds to world music to the more party-like
atmosphere of Friday Nights. Off Moroka makes a serious attempt to promote the
works of local artists. The current art exhibition is Imbizo - The Gathering,
curated by the Community Arts Workshop, and features the colourful works of
Lundi Mduba, Alfred Budaza, Richard Rhode, and Timothy Mafenuka.
