Die Kreefhuis
Appropriately named, Die Kreefhuis was in fact the first restaurant in the area
to serve a whole crayfish to diners, and whilst the prices of this delicacy may
have risen dramatically since the establishment first opened in 1986, it is
still a best seller on the menu particularly with the tourists who frequent
Lambert's Bay during the summer months. Situated in an attractive old building
which was once the factory managers house, the restaurant is opposite the Bird
Island entrance to the harbour and is fortunate to have sea views and space on
the pavement for outside tables and umbrellas which are in great demand when the
weather is good.
The character of the building has remained intact with the original Oregon
pine ceiling and fireplace which is put to good use on cool winter evenings.
Directly above the fireplace is a beautiful tromp loeil wall mural which
together with the patterned detail around the arched windows gives the
restaurant a distinct country house charm. The ambience is warm and welcoming
with an attractive oak bar at one end of the restaurant, and the owner is a
gracious hostess who is quick to point out that the dress code is casual and
informal which is perfectly suited to the many holidaymakers who have become
regular customers.
