De Kelder Restaurant
Established in 1791 by the Krige Family, who owned and ran Vredelust Wine
Estate, De Kelder is part of one of the original homesteads and now the oldest
restaurant in Stellenbosch. De Kelder has that nostalgic Cape ambience with
heavy beams on the ceiling and wine barrels set into the wall. Facing the beer
garden at the rear of the restaurant are the stables and coach house, almost
unchanged from the way they were more than 200 years ago when deliveries of wine
took place from here to surrounding areas.
Three distinct areas comprise De Kelder providing a venue for all no matter
what the event. The beer garden is the place to be on a summer evening, enjoying
the ambience of the homestead under Stellenbosch's night sky. The pub has become
a local favourite and the recent installation of a big screen packs in the fans
for the excitement of the big sporting events. The Restaurant provides elegant
but surprisingly affordable dining with generous portions and a South African
and German theme.
